John Battle was born ca 1634 in Yorkshire, England, and was among the first Battle's to immigrate to the American colonies, most probably with his brother, Matthew. John Battle, first married Mary Rame on July 30, 1638. John emigrated to America in 1654 with his second wife, Elizabeth, where they settled on the west fork of Nansemond River, a wide and beautiful river that the nourishes the “fertile lands of ancient Albemarle.” He secured a royal patent for 200 acres of land on December 14,1654, and in 1663 an additional grant of about 640 acres, from the Royal Governors of the Colony of Virginia. John died ca 1690, Paspetank, Pasquotank River, NC, Colonial America.
William Battle, son of John & Elizabeth Battle, was born in ca 1682 on the Pasquotank River in North Carolina. William Battle was only eight years old when his father died. After the death of John Battle ca 1690, William Battle returned with guardians (Lawrence & Mary Mageo) to his former home on the Nansemond River in Virginia, where he resided until his death in 1749. He married Sarah Hunter, daughter of William Hunter, ca 1707, and they had at least 5 children: 1) William, Jr.; 2) John, 3) ELISHA, 4) Sarah, and 5) Mary. 5 Generations, as I have in my files:

Elisha Battle, son of William & Sarah Hunter Battle, was born in Nansemond County, VA January 9, 1723. Elisha married Elizabeth Ruth Sumner in 1742, and in 1747, with his wife and 2 children, he moved to Tar River, Edgecombe County, NC and bought land on the north side of the river where he built a home, now ‘Cool Spring Plantation,’ – and was a true patriarch - joining in the political, spiritual, and jurisdiction life of the community, becoming a Justice of the Peace; Justice of the County Court; deacon of Falls of Tar River Baptist Church for 28 years; member of the General Assembly for 20 years; member of the Provincial Congress for many years; member of the Committee of Safety; delegate & chairman to the Constitutional Convention; and fervent patriot. He was a second Major in the Revolutionary Army; Field Officer 1770-1787. He was on a committee that voted for heavy taxation to raise troops and provide supplies. He was hard-working and strictly religious, and as a grandson said of him, “spoke in a plain and unvarnished manner but with prudence and judgment.” Elisha and Elizabeth had eight children: 1) Sarah, 2) JOHN, 3) Elizabeth Ruth, 4) Elisha, Jr., 5) William, 6) Jacob, 7) Jethro, and 8) Dempsey.
John Battle, son of Elisha & Elizabeth Ruth Sumner Battle, was born ca 1745. John married Frances Davis, whose parents are not known, NC. In 1779 his father, Elisha, gave to John with “love and affection” 3 tracts of land containing 707 acres on the south side of Tar River in Edgecombe County, NC; and in 1789 he acquired a further 273 acres. He would spend his entire life on the Tar River as a planter. John and Frances had 4 known children: 1) Josiah; 2) DAVIS; 3) Mary, and 4) Elisha.
Davis Battle, son of John & Frances Davis Battle, was born 3 Jul 1775 in Edgecombe County, NC. Davis married Margaret Bunn of Edgecombe, the widow of John Duncan Lamon and mother of 3 young children, on May 8, 1805. Davis and Margaret had least four known children: 1) William Davis (b 9 Apr 1806); 2) Jacob E. (b 15 May 1808); Joseph John (b 28 Oct 1809); and JOSIAH DAVIS BATTLE (born 18 Sep 1811). It is believed they left Edgecombe shortly after the birth of their children and moved to north Alabama, where Davis Battle died 25 Sep 1824; Margaret died 22 Aug 1838. Their 615 acres of property in Edgecombe is now part of Wake Forest University.
Josiah Davis Battle (called “Joe”), son of Davis & Margaret Bunn Battle, was born 18 Sep 1811 in Edgecombe County, NC. On 20 Dec 1837 he married Mary Elizabeth McCrary, daughter of Major. Thomas & Elizabeth Wright McCrary, in Madison County, AL. He was a merchant and planter, but died at the age of 52 on 2 Jan 1864. Mary Elizabeth lived until 20 Dec 1870. They had 8 children.

Emma Jane Battle was born 17 Aug 1840 in Meridianville, Madison County, AL. There, on 31 May 1860, she married Manoah Bostick Hampton, Jr., son of Manoah Bostick Hampton and Cynthia Mitchell. Their home was in Leighton, Colbert County, AL (picture of their old home in neglected state taken years after their deaths). Manoah was a calvary captain during the Civil War. They had seven children before Emma died 7 Jun 1882 at the age of 41. Their children were:
