The order of the Barons de l’Aigle is from "Historie des Antiquites de la ville de l'Aigle et des ses environs" There were other male descendants, who certainly could have had offspring, about which we know little, as well as many females who could have passed on the de l’Aigle name. Please forgive typo’s etc.... ! A very few names were included as hypothesis only... a way to remember that those de l’Aigle’s existed during a given time period, even though their parentage may be unknown, such as Guerin de l’Aigle, monk. My notes on these pages should explain those instances.
A friend, Mr. L. Eagle, pointed out to me that the title “Baron” is not entirely accurate. I use that title because that is the title used in the above noted book, and to show the succession of the “title” and hereditary lands. As Mr. Eagle stated:
No records have been found yet of any of them being formally knighted. I believe that they considered themselves above that status. They thought themselves only subject to the king. They were the Seigneurs – the lords of their territory and influence. While they carried out the baronial duties required of their overlord, they would not have stooped to the minor status of the title Baron. Their period ranking can be readily seen in the order in which their name appears in the signing of documents. Often they appeared immediately after the earls and before or after the bishops but nearly always before the barons and knights.
Richer I ‘s brother Gilbert, was granted Viscount of Exemes.
Gilbert I was in several instances ‘Commander of the Kings Forces’, and signed in the kings stead, for one of the treaties of Dover.
Richer II was described as ‘princeps’ – prince, in a couple of records. He was up himself, so to speak!
Gilbert II styled himself ‘Michel’ – The Greatest, (like Mohamed Ali) (This may be the origin for the name of his priory, Michelham).
Fulbert de Beine de l’Aigle, 1st baron de l’Aigle, the founder of the castle and dynasty of l'AIGLE, on the river Risle, arrondissement of Mortain (Orderic II, 26) may have taken his name from Beynes, west of Paris (Yvelines) ar. Rambouillet, cant. Montfort-l'Amaury). Kathleen Thompson wrote: In the ducal period it was a site of some strategic importance, for within 12 kilometres of Laigle the three river valleys of the Risle, the Iton and the Avre run south west to north east in parallel courses before taking their various routes to the sea. It was the course of the River Avre which came to form the boundary of the historic coutume of Normandy, but in a period when boundaries were represented by zones of fluctuating loyalties rather than by fixed lines all three river valleys were vital to the defence of Normandy. It was here that the authority of the counts of Rouen began to wear thin and lordship became uncertain. Beyond the River Avre the forested uplands of the Perche between Laigle and Chartres could easily shelter brigands and the lords of the area themselves were not above raiding their neighbours, as William the Conqueror well knew when he attempted in 1077 to launch the expedition from Laigle which was disrupted by the squabbling of Curthose and his younger brother, Henry. It was at Laigle in the reign of Duke Richard II of Normandy, that is before 1026, that we encounter the earliest known member of the Laigle lineage, Fulbert of Beina. His origins have proved impossible to trace. He may have been the Fulbert who appears among the extensive witness list appended to Duke Richard II's confirmation to the abbey of Bernay, made in 1025, but the name Fulbert was not uncommon in Normandy in the mid eleventh century, and his toponymic has not been identified. The earliest information about the family is derived, therefore, from Orderic Vitalis, who was interested in Fulbert and his descendants because they were patrons of his monastery of Saint-Evroul, but even Orderic's acquaintance with Fulbert was limited. He knew Fulbert of Beina chiefly as the father of Hiltrude, who was married to William Giroie, one of the founders of Saint-Evroul, and he knew that Fulbert had constructed a castle.
His children were : Egmoud, Engenulf, and Hiltrude, and possibly others.
Egmoud de l’Aigle: Per Orderic: William the Conqueror gave Engenulf “the lands of his father, to the harm of his older brother.” The Norman Chronicle of the Mégissier named EGMOUD de l’Aigle.
Engenulf de l’Aigle, 2nd baron de l’Aigle, is well document as a companion of the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. He was gouverneur de l'Aigle and probably one of the knights in the service of Robert, Comte de Mortain. Very briefly, he was born in the town of "Laigle" in ca 1005, was one of the 32 people proven to have been at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. By Engenulf's time the lordship was prospering and its lord could make a number of religious benefactions. He gave property to Saint-Evroul, for example, and also endowed the church of Saint-Sulpice-sur-Risle, which lay some three kilometres from Laigle, in prospectu...castri sitam, as a priory of Saint-Laumer of Blois. “Our earliest evidence of the family in ducal service is Engenulf's attestation of a ducal charter at Fécamp in the summer of 1066.” According to minstrel songs about his bravery, he died after the Battle whilst pursuing the Saxons that ran from the battle and he was one of many who died in what the French call "Malfosse" as depicted at the end of the Bayeau Tapestry and he is the man on horseback between the letters DERVN and SIMVL and to the left is a saxon with a hatchet. From Puck's Tales by Rudyard Kipling: 'At Santlache, over the hill yonder'- he pointed south-eastward towards Fairlight - 'we found Harold's men. We fought. At the day's end they ran. My men went with De Aquila's to chase and plunder, and in that chase ENGERRARD of the EAGLE was slain, and his son GILBERT took his banner and his men forward." In the words of G.H. White Engenulf was 'the only prominent Norman who lost his life in the battle'. Engenulf married Richerede, and “by her had several children.” (His children are on the next page)
Hildrude de l’Aigle married Guillaume Giroie Echauffour. Guillaume de Jumièges records that "Guillaume fils de Giroye" fought the comte du Mans, dated to the early 1030’s from the context of the passage. Son of Giroie according to Orderic Vitalis, who recounts that he was "unjustly and cruelly mutilated" by Guillaume "Talvas" son of Guillaume de Bellême who "blinded and emasculated him and cropped his ears". In another passage, Orderic Vitalis records that "Guillaume fils de Giroie et…ses neveux Hugues de Grentemenil et Robert don frère" restored the monastery of Ouche de Saint-Evroul. He became a monk at Bec three years later. He went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem twice, renouncing the world and taking monastic vows at the abbey of Bec after his second journey. m firstly HILTRUDE, daughter of FULBERT de Beina & his wife ---. Orderic Vitalis names her and her father, as well as her son. m secondly EMMA, daughter of WALCHELIN de Tannée & his wife ---. The Giroie’s gave their name to the commune of Saint-Céneri-the-Gérei. They were particularly established in country of Ouche where they restored the abbey of Saint-Évroult with Grandmesnil. I list two children: Arnoud and Guillaume, although Guilluame could have been a child of his 2nd marriage.
1) Arnoud Giroie Echauffour. During the years of the minority of William the Conqueror, Giroie are in conflict with the lords of Bellême. He returned from Apulia in [1064] and was promised the restoration of his inheritance by Guillaume II Duke of Normandy, but was poisoned by Mabile de Bellême on 1 Jan 1065. m EMMA, daughter of THURSTAN Haldup & his wife ---. She is named by Orderic Vitalis, who also names her father, and as children of her marriage, Guillaume, Reginald, Petronilla, Geva and "several other sons and daughters". After the murder of her husband, she took refuge with her brother Eudo, steward of the Duke of Normandy, and passed "almost 30 years of honourable widowhood there" More research is needed on his descendants.
2) Guillaume Giroie Echauffour Guillaume escaped poisoning by Mable, but he died after Sept. 1068 in Rome of a “fever.” I do not know if they had any children. He was of “small size but an exceptional knight, rebel to his father-in-law, wanted to renounce his woman to marry Maria, widow of the duke Atenulf, takes victoriously the troops of the Pope in Campanie (gift of 2 churches to Montecassino 09/1068); married ~1060/62? Marisa et Campagna di Capua, - dame d’Aquino, (girl of 1st Richard, prince of Capua, and of Frédessende de Hauteville.”
