The Ewing Family, continued (page 3)

The Early Ewing’s.... children of William Ewing “of Stirling, Scotland”

Robert Ewing, (son of William) was born between 1646 to 1655,  estimation based on him being between the age of 22 and 31 years old when his first child was born.  We do not really know if there were more children than what are listed below. Some sources have indicated that he was born in Scotland. However, we do not have anything to support where he was born. Based on some research done in Ireland, we have learned that the Ewing and Porter families were related before the dates Margaret, Elizabeth, and Alexander were born. Robert apparently died in Ireland since no record has been found that would put him in America. The name of his wife has never been found.

There was a Robert Ewing who was a feudal baron.    For our purposes here, we note that  Robert had a son Alexander (b. ca 1677) who had a son John (b. ca 1715), who had a son William (b. ca 1760) - who had a son Stephen S. (b. 12 Feb 1789) - who had a daughter Susan Purdum Ewing.   [Robert Marshall McClure: note the Purdum and the Ewing lines crossed here also.]

Information from "Ewings Genealogy Cognate Branches" by Presley Kittridge Ewing & Mary Ellen Ewing. Also "Ewing Genealogy" By Hon. Presley K. Ewing:

"Of the Loch Lomond Glasgow Clan.  Emigrated first to Isle of Bute in Scotland 1718. William Ewing, II, son of William Ewing and Elizabeth Milford, was brought to Ireland from Scotland by his parents when they  removed to Ulster. William II settled aroound Coleraine, while Robert, his brother, lived near Londonderry.  All of the male children of William II traveled to America in 1727, along with their cousin, Alexander Ewing, son of Robert. All sailed aboard the same ship, according to family tradition a vessel chartered by the Ewings for the voyage and christened The Eagle Wing."

Very little information is known about the family of Robert Ewing.  Marguerite and Vernon Brown in their book, "Ewing - McCulloch - Buchanan Genealogy" present this family and they indicate that Robert is a brother to William Ewing, who is discussed in Chapter 5 of that book, and they are both sons of a William Ewing of Stirling who was born in the early 1600's in Scotland. However, the Browns did not give any references or sources for their indication that Robert was a son of William Ewing of Stirling, or for him being a brother to William.   The baptisms of his children were obtained by Elbert W.R. Ewing; from bpatism records for Burt Congregation near Londonderry.

Robert’s descendants, as I know them (please be aware that I have not made a concerted effort to research all these descendants).  Refer to the above pdf file for my notes:

Frances Ewing, daughter of William, was born 1/8 Dec 1653 in Londonderry, Ireland.    Other than these notes, I know nothing else about Frances.

In the Derry Cathedral congregation register we find that Frances, daughter of William Ewin, merchant, was born in Londonderry December 1, 1653. William Ewin was a witness to a marriage in 1654, not long after the register was begun. July 17, 1655, William Ewing witnessed a marriage. After "bancs" (banns) were published three several Lord's days before the Londonderry Congregation, Elizabeth Ewing being present, she was married. Frances, daughter of William Ewin, was born December 8, 1653; William Ewing, son of William Ewing, was baptized May 27,1655; Alexander, son of William Ewing, was born October 3, 1656; Patrick, son of William Ewing, was born November 11, 1657; and so on, Joshua, Nathaniel, Rachel, all the family names are there and are repeated from generation to generation. For instance:

John, son of Alexander Ewing and Margaret, was buried 1682.
Elizabeth, daughter of John Ewine and Katherine, his wife, was buried May, 1683.
Katherine, wife of John Ewine, was buried October, 1684.
Martha, daughter of John Ewing and Janet, his wife, was buried September 30, 1691.
Sarah, daughter of John Ewing and Jenitt, his wife, was buried October 17, 1693.
John, son of Elizabeth Ewing, widow, was buried July, 1695.
James, son of John Ewing and Jenitt, was buried April, 1697.
William Ewine and Agnes Anderson were married October, 1683.
William, son of John Porter and Margaret, his wife, was buried November, 1683.
William Ewine and Agnes Anderson were married November, 1683.
Jane, the wife of William Ewing, "Serjent," was "bird" July 13, 1701.
Mary, daughter of Humphrey Ewing, is mentioned.
"Mr. Samuel Ewing was 'bired' August 3, 1771.
James, son of Joshua Ewin and wife, May, was buried October, 1703.
John, son of John Ewin and wife, Jenatt, was buried March, 1700.
Robert, son of Alexander Ewing, was born 1654.
Nathaniel Ewing was born 1684.
Nathaniel, son of Samuel Ewing and Katherine, was buried December, 1691.
William, son of John and Mary Eweings, was christened in St. Peter and St. Kevin, Dublin, August 7, 1758.
Maryanne, daughter of Richard and May Ewing, was born 1745.
James Ewing in 1700 was buried at St. Catherines, Dublin.
George Ewing was one of the church officials in Parish of St. Andrew, Dublin, 1733-'34,  as disclosed by the publications of the Dublin Parish, Register Society. Pat.
Ewing was a church warder in Dublin in 1734.
Ewing, Alexander, Elizabeth, Frances, Humphrey, Isabell, James, Janett, John, Joseph, Joshua,
Katharine, Margaret, Martha, Nathaniel, Patrick, Robert, Samuel, Sara, Thomas, are all  found in these old registers.
John Ewing and Isabell Nelson married November 18, 1658.
Isabell, daughter of John Ewing, was baptized January, 1658.
"John Ewing, Isabell Ewing and Katherine Hackett, gossips," says the laconic record of March 25, 1664.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILLIAM EWING (II) * (son of William) was born about 1655, he was baptized 27 May 1655 Derry Cathedral, Londonderry, Ireland; he apparently died in Ulster, Ireland.

Presley Ewing wrote:   William Ewing, "who was the son of William Ewing and his wife, Eliza Milford," was born about 1665-1670, near Stirling Castle in Scotland, when he went to County Londonderry, Ireland, "taking up his abode at or near Coleraine, which was probably in or about the year 1685, for in that year, during Passion Week, the rites of the Church of Rome were openly celebrated at Westminster with full splendor, and in the same year, the suppression of the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion in England, and that of the Earl of Argyll in Scotland, was followed by great severities, practiced by the King (James II of England and VII of Scotland), resulting in many of the Scotch Presbyterians fleeing from Scotland to the North of Ireland to escape the religious persecutions imposed upon them."

There is universal agrrement William Ewing, of the old Loch Lomond or Glasgow Clan, was born ca 1660 in Scotland within the old clan territory along the southeastern shores of Loch Lomond near Stirling Castle.  He was known as "William of Scotland".  William Ewing was born in County Dumbarton, near Glasgow, Scotland.  The seat of the Ewing Clan being originally on the River Forth not far from Stirling Castle.

There is the belief that William Ewing was married in Ireland and he lived around or in Coleraine, Ireland. No written documents have been found that establishes exactly the area where William lived. If he lived close to Coleraine, he could have been in the county of Londonderry.

William Ewing is supposed to have been born about the time the Earl of Argylshire instituted his rebellion against the rule of Catholicism, and called for an uprising of the Scottish Clans.  William Ewing is supposed to have been a member of one of the Clans.  The Ewing's were Covenanters, or dissenters (non-conformist) to the Roman Catholic Church.  Because of religious persecution, and perhaps for other reasons, William, with his family, removed to northern Ireland about the year 1680, where they settled amongst relatives who had gone earlier to Ireland.   From various research efforts, the main residence of the Ewing's seems to have been in the Diocese of Raphoe, County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland.    The story is that King James gave John Ewing 200 acres of the flat lands of Baily Bun in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1614.   When Argyle was caught and executed, many of his followers fled to north of Ireland (Ulster)where Protestantism had a foothold, and a man had some liberty to worship according to his own conscience. But they were pursued by the King's armies, and at Londonderry they were besieged for 105 days, suffering great hardship but steadfastly refusing to yield; they were finaly relieved by a friendly army, and the siege ended in 1689.   His children were born in Ireland, and it is known that he had several wives.

The children of William Ewing emigrated to America about 1725 from Coleraine, Ireland and some of them settled in Pennsylvania or Cecil County, Maryland, from there several went to Virginia, and they became widely scattered.   He had one son by his first wife and several by his second wife. Apparently William died in Ireland since no record has been found that would indicate he came to America.

To this branch of the Ewing family, through one of William's sons, belong Adlai Ewing Stevenson, a distinguished lawyer and legislator, Vice-president of the United States in 1893-97; James S. Ewing, United States minister to Belgium during the same period; and many other notable men and women.

The name of his first wife is not known.     There was one child:

Nathaniel, born calculated 1693 - died 6 Sep 1748 in Cecil County, MD.     "Nathaniel Ewing was born about 1695 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland, an only child of his father William Ewing by his first wife.  Nathaniel had at least four half-brothers, John, Joshua, Samuel, and James, and perhaps others, who came to America with him in 1727.   Nathaniel and Joshua bought adjoining plantations in Cecil County, Maryland."    Nathaniel married Rachel Porter (a second cousin), daughter of Josiah Porter and Margaret Ewing.
