Balch Family, continued, page 3

Generation Seven

ELIJAH WHITFIELD BALCH [son of Rev. Hezekiah Balch and Hannah Lewis] was born ca 1787 at Greenville, Greene County, TN; died 26 Oct 1824-Greenville College Farm,TN).    From the notes of Gene Balch, generously provided June, 2008:    Elijah is said by family tradition to have been born in 1786 and lived most of his life in the east Tennessee area.   He is mentioned in the book "One Hundred Year Portrait - 1775-1875" on Greeneville, Tennessee, by Richard Doughty.  the following is quoted - "That students then sometimes got into serious difficulties may be perceived from Dr. Coffins statement of February 9. 1805:  'We admonish the students for being at a scene of youthful frolic in Mr. Benj. Farnsworth's house and Prince in particular for returning a challenge to a duel with Elijah Balch ...." It might be noteworthy that Elijah was married to Mary (Molly) Green in 1805.

He was executor of his father's will, in about 1810.  His father left 24 acres of land to Greenville College and many of the campus buildings stand on that land today.  In 1810 that land was a farm, on which Elijah lived.

Elijah served as an Officer (Ens) in the war of 1812, also John Balch is shown as a Private.

Elijah and wife Mary had eleven children, all born in Greeneville. Both Elijah W and his son Elijah Whitfield Jr., are listed in the 1800-1809 Greene County, TN Census records.

He married Mary "Mollie" GREEN *  on 30 November 1805.   She was the daughter of George GREEN and Mary CHANEY, and was born in 1788 in Greeneville, Greene Co., TN..  She died about 14 Nov 1849 in Greene Co., TN.

Generation Eight

ELIZABETH BALCH was born on 18 December 1807 in Greene County, TN.    She married THOMAS JACKSON on 5 December 1829 in Greenville, Greene Co., TN.    Thomas was the son of Vincent Jackson and Mary Glascock.     Thomas was a merchant and farmer in Greeneville, but I don’t know when either of them died.

THOMAS JACKSON wrote to his son, GRANVILLE T. JACKSON, in 1863.  Granville was serving in the 1st South Carolina cavalry at the time:

 Bay Mount. - Tenn
   July 23, 1863

My Dear Son Granville ~

In great haste I seat myself to write you a few lines.   Our county here at this time is in a terrible condition.  The Federals are expected here daily.   The "Tories" cutting up all.  Every Southern man in this section have been robed (robbed, sic), but myself, & I am expecting to be every night.   I believe I wrote to you before that there were only eight Southern men in this settlement, and of course we can't defend ourselves.  A large company of my own neighbors left for KY last night, and the mountains are full of them here.   If I was not a lone man, & could get about, I would not fear them any - but as it is, I think I had better try and get any stock all to some safe place.   Will you Granville try and get a leave of absence for a few weeks & come home & help me move them.  You know I cant do it myself, and if they take what little I have to feed my family on next year, I am a ruined man.  Granville come if you can, and as soon as possible, too, as I'm so anxious about my stock.  My family, I think I will leave here until I see how they treat others, then perhaps I will have an opportunity to get them away.

Your Mother is not very well,  the girls are well, all sends love.  We have not heard one word from William for some time.  James' Co suffered severely at Vicksburg.  I hear all of the Officers were killed or wounded.

Granville if you have any love for your dear Mother,  & dear old crippled grey headed Father, I know you will try & come to my aid.

     In haste - Your Father
      THOS. JACKSON.

Write or come very soon.
