The Battle Abbey Roll: With Some Account of the Norman Lineages:   Of these, the most considerable - that of the Viscounts MONTAGUE- was an offset of the great Norman house of LA FERTE, who held the barony of La Ferte (now La Ferte Fresnel) near Evreux.   Hugh de la Ferte is mentioned by Wace at Hastings.  Richard de la Ferte accompanied Robert of Normandy to Palestine in 1096, and his youngest son, Gamel, surnamed Le Brun (according to family tradition to distinguish him from a brother called Le Blond), settled in Cumberland, where he had baronial grants from Waldeve FitzGospatric, and his descendants long flourished, the name gradually changed to Broyne, Brown, or Browne.   Anthony, a younger son of Robert Le Broun, knight of the shire for Cumberland 1317-1339, settled in Long, became a rich merchant, and was created a Knight of the Bath at the coronation ofRichard II as a reward for having lent the King a very large sum of money, and then generously cancelled the bond.  He left two sons, Sir Robert and Sir Stephen, the latter of whom became Lord Mayor of London in 1439.   The eldest, Sir Robert, of Beechworth in Surrey, was the ancestor of the baronets of Beechworth, extinct in 1690; and of Anthony Browne, the fortunate cadet with whom the promotion of the family began."   (more about the "Brown's" of England not quoted).

I have some little information on a Pierre, Guillaume, and Hugues de la Ferte-Fresnel, but so far nothing on Richard.   Research is ongong.

I found this posted online, cannot verify.   They seem to have changed their name to de Chambray:
1st gen   Richard II de la FERTE-FRESNEL x Emeline de LAIGLE
2nd gen  Simon I de CHAMBRAY x Isabelle de GRANDVILLIERS - seigneur de Chambray, décédé avant 1210
3rd gen        Simon II de CHAMBRAY seigneur de Chambray x Eustachie des ESSARTS

There was a Walter de l’Aigle (as might be written in the corner of our genealogy?)     1253, Sir WALTER DE AQUILA:    There was a very odd charter written by Simon de Montfort regarding "final and perpetual banishment of the Jews from the town of Leicester."   This charter was witnessed by Sir Walter de Aquila:

Transactions By Jewish Historical Society of England, page 39:   "Simon de Montfort, son of Earl Simon de Montfort, lord of Leicester, to all the faithful in Christ, who may see and hear the present age, health in the Lord.  Know all of you that I ,f or the good of my soul, and the souls of my ancestors and successors, have granted, and by this my present charter have confirmed, on behalf of me and my heirs forever, to my burgesses of Leicester and their heirs, that no Jew or Jewess, in my time or in the time of any of my heirs to the end of the world, shall within the liberty of the town of Leicester, inhabit or remain or obtain a residence.  I also wish and command that my heirs after me observe and warrant forever that liberty entire and inviolate to the aforesaid burgesses.  And in testimony of this I have confirmed the present charter with my seal.  Witnesses:  Sir Aumery of Mittun; Sir Walter de Aquila, Sir Roger Blund, Chaplaint, William de Anet, then bailiff of Lecister, William Bassett, William of Miravall, and others."          "Domino Waltero de Aquila"

Gilbert III de l’Aigle, 8th baron de l’Aigle, died in 1235; no heirs.

Richer IV  de l’Aigle, 9th baron de l’Aigle, after his brother Gilbert’s death.
Rough translation from the Historie:   “Here finishes the dynasty of founders of (de l’Aigle), Gilbert III and Richer IV who were  on the masculine line, the last descendants of Fulbert, of which the family, after two hundred twenty-five years of possession of the fortress that it had built, died out without leaving direct successors.  After them and following the marriage of a daughter of Richer II, the baronnie, as we will see it, from one of the branches of the ducal house of Brittany, that was conserved for more than three hundred years.”

What I have tried to show is that there were certainly children, both male and female de l’Aigle’s, who could have had children/descendants, that had nothing to do with the “title.”    With the title went the land in l’Aigle, to the eldest male heir.   Younger male children could most certainly have moved away and made lives elsewhere.

Various clues are found all along the way - such as the Norman de l’Aigle seigneurs supporting Chaize-Dieu, which was located in the “Prieure parish.”    Our ancestor Guillaume de l’Aigle (son of Antoine) was first  “in the parish of La Predier, then afterward of St. Ciers-Champagne (Charente-Maritime).”   I have been unable to locate the parish of la Predier, and this note (see notes for Gilbert, 7th baron de l’Aigle) is the closest I have seen to the name.   And of course our double-headed eagle, as brought to the United States by grand-père Nicolas de l’Aigle in 1794 still stands as the strongest.    Perhaps by getting the succession of the title out of the way, we can pursue learning more about the other de l’Aigle’s!
There is still a lot of research to be done, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

In our family papers it is stated that our de l’Aigle family aligned with the following families.
If anyone has information on these families, please contact me!

Coat of Arms of the House of de l’Aigle Montagne of Xaintonge; according to an old manuscript sealed with the arms of the house of de l’Aigle of Chamgerbault:

· Montagne de l’Aigle:  an eagle of silver with two heads on a field of gules
· MEU, eagle of silver, with a single head, in a field of gules
· D’ANTON or D’AUTHON, three estans of green chains (perhaps green wood) in a field of silver “is the family of d’Anton in England
· CONGANSAC, three heads in azure, in a field of silver
· CHASTELARS, three swords of silver in a field of sable
· CHASAGNE, star and a cross of silver in a field of gules, and a band of gold across the middle.

“These are the six branches and coats of arms which are in the escutcheon of the house of Montagne de l’Aigle in Xaintonge, from which house are descended the Sieurs de l’Aigle de la Montagne, who are a present living in France.”

I hope others will forgive the poor computer translations from French.   I had to first type the French text and then try to translate it, so typographic mistakes could have contributed to confusing translations, as well!
I post this information to 1) share it with my DeLaigle family, and 2) to hopefully open dialogue with others who have information to share about any de l’Aigle.
