Balch Family, continued, page 2

Sons of Hezekiah Balch and Martha Bloomer:
James (born 1714) and John Balch (born 1716)

Generation Five:

JAMES BALCH was born 5 December 1714 in St. Georges Parish, Harford County, Maryland Colony, died 1779 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC.    He married ANN GOODWIN [Goodwyn] on 19 Jan 1736/1737.      Ann was born 10 Jan 1718/1719 in Georgetown, MD, died December 1760 in Deer Creek, Harford County, Maryland.      In the same locality as “Balch’s Adobe” (see note above for John) there was a tract of land called "Bond's Hope" conveyed to James Balch, by Jacob Giles and Isaac Webster, on November 2, 1743, as is shown by the records in the clerk's office of the Superior Court of Baltimore.  This land was on the Northside of Deer Creek in Baltimore County (Now Harford County), Maryland.    One note says that James moved to  Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, probably in 1769.  If this date is correct, it was after Ann’s death.

The other son of Hezekiah Balch and Martha Bloomer was:

JOHN BALCH of “Balch’s Abode” was born 23 Jan 1716 in St. Georges Parish, Harford County, Maryland.    He died after 27 Nov 1790 in Mecklenburg Co., NC   (this is our line)

Seventy-five years after the immigrant John Baltch in Maryland assigned over his rights to property due him for his emigration to John Lloyd in 1663, we find that there was a grant for a tract of land called "Balch's Abode," amounting to 36 acres, and lying in Baltimore County, on the north side of Deer Creek.  It was surveyed for John Balch, October 1, 1738, and patented to him December 14, 1739.

John BALCH and Mary CANNON were married on 24 Mar 1735 in St. Georges Parish, Maryland.   They had one child, Hezekiah (*see below).  She obviously died fairly young, as he also married a second time {to Sarah?], and they had five children.   I have not researched those children.   John’s family, as I know them (first 2 generations) were:

1. JOHN BALCH of "Balch's Abode"  (b.23 Jan 1716-St. Georges Parish,Harford County,MD d.Mecklenburg Co.,NC)
sp: Mary CANNON (m.24 Mar 1735)

 |  |-3. Elizabeth BALCH (no children, died young) (b.1771-North Carolina d.11 Mar 1795)
 |  | sp: Rev. Robert HENDERSON
 |  |-3. Dorcas BALCH (b.1774-North Carolina d.14 Feb 1837)
 |  | sp: Mr. WILEY (WYLEY) (a merchant in Greenville, TN)
 |  |-3. Washington BALCH (unmarried) (b.Cal 1789 d.30 Apr 1812)

 | sp: Ann LUCKEY (dau of Robert Luckey of NY, no children) (m.1808 d.1835-Jonesborough,Tennessee)

Generation Six

Rev. HEZEKIAH BALCH of Greenville, TN, was born 1741 on the north side of Deer Creek in the neighborhood of "Bond's Hope," Maryland - died  April 1810 in Greenville, Greene Co.,Tennessee.   He married HANNAH LEWIS in 1769 in North Carolina.   “She possessed a fine intellect and great personal attractions, but in after life was under some mental derangement.”  He married second, in 1808:  Ann (b. abt 1763), daughter of Robert Luckey of New York State.  She was born in Pennsylvania, and died in 1835, aged 72 years, at Jonesborough, Tennessee.  They had no children.

The Rev. Hezekiah Balch is buried in Old Greeneville Cemetery, Rocky Hill, Greenville, TN.    It is to be assumed that his first wife Hannah is also buried there [Hannah Lewis Balch died about 1808].

To quote:  * “His father is said by tradition to have also been named Hezekiah, and he was probably a cousin of James Balch of Maryland.     [* That sentence threw me, for awhile.... - but I believe he is the Hezekiah born to John Balch and Mary Cannon.   [If you have proof to the contrary, please contact me!]      Hezekiah and Hannah had six children.  They were married only a short time before his death.

Much as been written about the Rev. Hezekiah Balch; too much to include here.     But some of the notes about him read:

Rev. Dr. Balch had dark, lustrous eyes, an erect frame, and commanding presence.  Frankness, intrepidity and earnestness characterized his address, but strong convictions and rash impulses led him into many bitter strife's.  Between 1758 and 1762 he was a student at Princeton College, but the college records show that he graduated in 1776 in the class with Rev. Hezekiah James Balch.

In 1770, Hezekiah Balch, whose life is identified with the history of the Presbyterian Church in East Tennessee, was ordained as an evangelist by the Presbytery of New Castle, and entered on his labors as a missionary of the Presbytery of Hanover in North Carolina.    As the number of ministers and churches in this region increased, the need was felt for another Presbytery, the membership of which should consist of ministers south of the Virginia line.   So at a meeting of the Hanover Presbytery in 1770, a petition was prepared for Synod, asking for a Presbytery for Carolina and the South.  The petition was granted, and Hugh McAden, Henry Patillo, David Caldwell, James Criswell, HEZEKIAH BALCH, Hezekiah James Balch, and Joseph Alexander were constituted a Presbytery, by the name of Orange.  [History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, by Ezra Hall Gillett]

At Greenville, Tennessee in 1783, he assisted in the regular organization of Mount Bethel church.  Under his pastorate Dr. Watts' version of the Psalms was introduced, against violent opposition, but the church took the lead in the valley of the Holston and Tennessee rivers, and was the scene of constant and at time of powerful revival.  At this time Dr. Balch, with his predecessor in church and educational work, Dr. Samuel Doak, participated in efforts to organize the chaotic elements of the short lived state of Franklin.

Greenville College, the first west of the Alleghany Mountains, was founded by him, and a charter obtained in August, 1794.   An act appointed the Rev. Hezekiah Balch, President of the College, and located it upon his farm, three miles from Greeneville, which he had purchased, and he ably presided over it until his death, sixteen years later.

A lightning stroke, by which he lost his barn, hay and horse, was interpreted by his persecutors as a token of God's anger, but so great was his sense of God's love and adorable sovereignty, that to him the burning of his property was a joyful opportunity for him, by abasing himself in the dust, to exalt his God.

At the death of his wife, his words were:  "Blessed be God, absolute, unconditional submission to His will is a plaster sufficient for every sore."   In his will he gave his soul to his God to be made for Christ's sake, in boundless grace, an eternal vessel of mercy in heaven, or in righteous judgment for his sins, a vessel of everlasting wrath in hell.   Thus did Dr. Balch refuse to make conditions with God, but cordially submitted without reserve for time and for eternity.
