Thomas Claiborne, (the elder), born ca 1525/1531 was Mayor (1573), Justice of the Peace (1574), and Alderman for the Parish of St. Margaret, King’s Lynn Borough, Norfolk, England.   A merchant who, on his death, left many bequests to the church and charities, as well as to his children Dorothy, Katherine, and son THOMAS, Jr., who was appointed executor of his estate.   He died between December 1581 - when his will was written, and May 1582 - when his will was probated.   He stipulated that he desired to be buried "in the parish church of St. Margaret’s in King's Lynn” near the sepulcher of his late wife.

Thomas Claiborne (Jr.) was born ca 1557.  He was the Mayor (1592) and Alderman (1591) of the Kings Lynn Borough (Parish of St. Margaret) in Norfolk, England.    He married Sara James (nee Smyth), the widow of Roger James, on November 21, 1598 at St. Dunstan's Stepney, Middlesex.    Sarah had four children from her first marriage.   After their marriage, Sara and Thomas moved to the Parish of Stepney, Middlesex, and finally to the Parish of Crayford in Kent.   He was a wealthy merchant, with a business in London in the late 1590’s.   I have seen reference to the fact that that Thomas and Sara Claiborne were the owners, among other assets, of The Royal James, a tavern that stood between Shakespeare's Globe Theater and the River Thames.   The children of Thomas & Sara Smythe Claiborne were  1)  Thomas,  2) WILLIAM,  3) Sara, 4) Katherine, and 5) Blanche.   The baptisms of these children were recorded in Crayford Parish.   Thomas, III and his wife Jane accompanied his brother when William Claiborne returned to Virginia in May 1631.   Thomas and Sara were married not quite 9 years, before his death in Crayford, Kent on Sept. 10, 1607.

Hon./Capt. William Claiborne, born ca 1600, baptized 10 August 1600 in Crayford, son of Thomas & Sara Smyth-James Claiborne.  William was our immigrant ancestor.  William was admitted to Pembroke College, Cambridge, 31 May 1617 at age 16.   On 13 June 1621 he was chosen by the Virginia Company to undertake the task of Surveyor of the Colony, compensated with 200 acres of land in the colony.  He arrived at Jamestown in October, 1621 on the ship the George.   He laid out the area on Jamestown Island known as New Towne.  William would achieve many honors during his lifetime.  In 1623 he was appointed to the council, and would serve as the first Secretary of the Colony 1625-35, 1652-60,  and Treasurer – appointed for life in this position.   He accumulated large tracts of land, including 250 acres at Archer’s Hope (James City); 500 acres at Blount Point (Warwick), 150 acres at Elizabeth City; 5000 acres in Northumerland County; 5000 acres on the Pamunkey; and 1,500 acres on the north wide of the York the River.   His plantation in Virginia- was called “Romancoke.”   By 1626 he had accumulated a total of 17,500 acres in 7 different locales.  In 1631 he settled the Isle of Kent in the Chesapeake Bay and named his plantation there Crayford, becoming the 1st White Settler in what is now known as the State of Maryland   He would subsequently lose his land on the Isle of Kent due to political machinations of the Royal Governor.   He served courageously as Captain of the colonial troops in their struggles with the Indians.

William married ca 1635 Elizabeth Butler, born ca 1610 in Roxwell, Essex, England.  “She was the daughter of John Butler (1585 - ?) and Jane Elliott (abt. 1582 - ?) of Little Burche Hall, Roxwell, Essex, England. Elizabeth's siblings were John Butler of Kent Island, Sara Butler, ? Butler (female), and Thomas Butler, married Joan Mountsteven Butler wife of Nicholas Mountsteven, haberdasher of St. Marins at Ludgate.  Elizabeth's uncle was Capt. Nathaniel Butler, Governor of Bermuda.”

William & Elizabeth’s children were 1) Jane, 2) John, 3) THOMAS, 4) William, Jr. “the younger”, and 5) Leonard.    William had died by Mar 1677, probably on his plantation, Romancoke.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas Claiborne of Romancoke was born 17 August 1647 in King William Co., VA., son of Capt. William & Eliz. Butler Claiborne.    He served as Lt. Colonel in the colonial militia’s struggle with the Indians, and it is said he eventually died from wounds received while fighting.   “In 1665 he received a grant of 500 acres New Kent county, and in 1677 - 1,500 acres on the "upper forks of York river."   He married Sarah Fenn and had at least 2 children:  1) THOMAS, Jr., and 2) Elizabeth.  He died 7 Oct 1683 on Romancoke, in King William Co., VA, and his grave can still be found there.   It is speculated that he married a 2nd time to Sarah Dandridge.    Sarah, widow of Thomas Claiborne, remarried after Thomas’ death and died 18 Oct 1716.

Capt. Thomas Claiborne, Jr. of Sweet Hall, was born 1 Jan 1680 at Romancoke, King William Co., VA.   About 1720 he built Sweet Hall on part of a tract -1800 acres- patented in 1653 by his grandfather William Claiborne, which still stands.   He was captain of dragoons in the King William County militia.   He died 16 Aug 1732, and was buried at Sweet Hall, where his tombstone bears the "Claiborne arms"   It is claimed he married 3 times, and had numerous children by each, but I am only familiar with his ca 1703 marriage to Ann Fox.

Ann Fox was born 20 May 1684 - died 4 May 1733.   Ann was the daughter of Henry Fox, Burgess and Justice of King William County, and Ann West.    Anne Fox was a descendant of GOVERNOR JOHN WEST (I) of Virginia, born in England December 14, 1590, the son of Sir Thomas West, 2nd Lord Delaware.  Capt. John West who immigrated in 1618 and became Governor in 1635 was also a member of the Virginia Council for 29 years.  He died in 1659.  His brother Thomas West, 3rd Lord Delaware, was Governor of Virginia in 1610.   Another brother, Francis, was Governor of Virginia in 1627.  By his marriage to Anne Knollys, daughter of Sir Francis Knollys, Gov. John West had a son John.  COL. JOHN WEST (II), born 1632, died 1689, married in 1658 Unity Croshaw, daughter of Major Joseph Croshaw, born 1610, died 1677, a member of the York County Militia and Burgess in 1658, who was a son of Capt. Raleigh Croshaw, the immigrant, who came in September 1608, was an early Burgess and is mentioned by Captain John Smith in his History.  John and United (Croshaw) West had a daughter ANNE WEST (III) who married Henry Fox, born 1650, died 1714, Burgess, Justice and Sheriff of King William County.  Their daughter, ANNE FOX (IV) married THOMAS CLAIBORNE.

Thomas & Ann Fox Claiborne’s children were:    1) LEONARD;  2) Thomas, 3) Sarah, 4) Nathaniel, 5) William “Billy” 6) Augustine 7) Elizabeth 9) Bernard, 9) Martha, 10) Frances 11) James,  12) John,  and 13) Daniel.

Leonard Claiborne, son of Thomas & Ann Fox Claiborne, was born ca 1703, and was a Justice of King William County (1726,1729), Sheriff (1732), and represented King William County in the Virginia House of Burgesses (1736-40).     John Fitzgerald sold Leonard, then a resident of Prince George County, 133 acres on Namozine Creek in Amelia County 14 January 1745/6.  Leonard got a patent for 419 acres on Wards Creek in Lunenburg County in 1758 that he sold the same year to Robert Hannah the same year. He moved first to Dinwiddie County, VA, and finally to Georgia, where he died 8 May 1785.

He married first Martha Burnell, who died at the age of 19 leaving one son, Burnell.  He second married Elizabeth Barber, daughter of William Barber and Ann Archer of York County, VA.    Maj. Barber identified his daughter as Elizabeth Claiborne in his 1732 will in York County and the will of her grandmother Elizabeth Archer placed her as the wife of Leonard Claiborne.

Leonard and Elizabeth had at least five children:  1) LEONARD, Jr., 2) Daniel, 3) Richard, 4) Thomas, and 5) Barber.   There was also possibly a son named William.

Leonard Claiborne, Jr. (birth date unknown) was “an attorney of Lunenburg County, 1747-56, and of Dinwiddie County, where he served as a member of the House of Burgesses, 1758-65, but apparently suffered financial difficulties and moved to Georgia, where he took the oaths as an attorney, 18 December, 1766, and was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the Second Regiment of Augusta, GA, militia, 18 March 1767.”   His death was announced in The South Carolina Gazette and Country Journal, Tuesday, July 9, 1771, where it stated:   "DIED At New-Savannah, LEONARD CLAIBORNE, Attorney at Law."  New Savannah was an area outside Augusta, GA.   He married a Miss Poythress, whose first name was probably Elizabeth, in February 1729.    Their only known child was Elizabeth “Betsey” Claiborne.

ELIZABETH “Betsey” CLAIBORNE married  first)  John Walton in 1769, son of Robert Walton who identified his son in his 1746 will in Cumberland County,VA, and Mary Hughes.   Elizabeth and John moved to Richmond County, Georgia.  John represented Augusta in the Georgia Provincial Congress in July 1775.   John was the brother of George Walton, Georgia Signer of the Declaration of Independence.    More information is provided about John Walton on another page.     We cannot find, so far, either a birth or death date for Elizabeth Claiborne Walton.   John Walton died 1781/1783 in Augusta, Ga (will made in 1778)

Elizabeth and John Walton had the following children:
1) Elizabeth Martha Walton, born ca 1772, who married her first cousin, Col. Robert Watkins, son of Sarah “Sally” Walton and Thomas Watkins, on 22 June 1785.   *
2) Leonard Claiborne Walton
3) John Walton.   John is mentioned in his fathers will.  There was a John Walton, attorney, in Augusta, GA, who was possibly  this child.   But I cannot verify that.   If so, he probably died fairly young, and there were no heirs.
4) “the child my wife now goes with” as mentioned in John Walton’s will.    Nothing further is known of this child.

*   Note:  By Nov, 1791, Elizabeth Martha Walton Watkins was the sole surviving heir of her father, John Walton:

POWER OF ATTORNEY:    "STATE OF GEORGIA.   KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I, ROBERT WATKINS of Rosney in the same State, Attorney at Law, heir at law by intermarriage with ELIZABETH MARTHA WALTON, only surviving issue of the honorable JOHN WALTON Esquire of New Savannah in the said State, deceased, who was assignee representative and heir at law of LEONARD CLAIBORNE Esquire, late of the State of Virginia, attorney at law, deceased, do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my trusty friend Thomas Woodleif, Esquire, of the Said State of Virginia, my true and lawful attorney, for me and in my name, to ask for, demand, and receive, or sue and loyally recover whatsoever the lott or lotts, land or lands, which may be my right, in the said last mentioned State, as heir at law and legal representative as aforesaid.    And I do hereby further authorize my said friend, to rent, lease, sell, or otherwise dispose of the same, or any part thereof to my use and benefit, and in my name to transfer and convey the same, and do bind myself, my heirs executors and administrators to uphold and support the said Woodleif in all which legal acting and doings; and to ratify and confirm what my said attorney may do in this respect, which shall be as binding up on me and my heirs, as if the same had been transacted by myself in person.   19th NOVEMBER, 1791.

Signed and sealed & delivered ROBERT WATKINS, L.S. in the presence of J. C. WALTON, THO. WATKINS, Recorded November 19th, 1791."

Elizabeth married 2nd) David Douglass, in March 1781, in British occupied Augusta, GA.    David was the brother of John Douglas [or Douglass], who was purportedly a lieutenant-colonel in the Georgia militia and remained a loyalist during the Revolution.   John apparently fled Georgia at the end of the war, settling in East Florida, where his daughter, Ann, married Francis Philip Fatio.

David was the aide-de-camp of General Samuel Elbert, and he apparently drowned in 1790.   David Douglass owned a house and lot on Broad Street, in Augusta, GA, No. 42, which was sold in 1792 as part of his estate.  He also assisted in administering the estate of John Walton on behalf of John’s children.

The descendants of Elizabeth & David Douglass are as follows, (as I know them to date):
